Frequently Asked Questions
Anxiety, depression and trauma therapy in New Jersey
You are tired of feeling stuck and your relationships and career are suffering. You are ready to feel relief and to be on the journey to your best, most successful self. You are ready to dig deep and make changes. Now is the time to invest in YOU!
You are ready to make the move to schedule. But …. you have more questions. You freeze. You aren’t sure how to ask and they feel like a huge barrier to making the call. You wonder “does anyone ask these questions?” They sure do!! All the time, so let me get you started and then you can ask more if you need to.
How long do counseling sessions typically last?
This depends on the client and the goals. There is no one size fits all approach for the work I do with clients. You would benefit most from weekly sessions for 12 sessions and at that time we can reassess. The reason for weekly is that it allows for time to build rapport and to have consistency. Typically, the beginning stages are to process the stressor that brought you to therapy, get you out of the crisis feeling and as we heal from that we will move into deeper work to uncover the root and to make healthy changes in your life that will be sustainable and help you to evolve into the highest potential of yourself. From there we may continue weekly or move to bi-weekly. If we move to bi-weekly you can always move back to weekly if needed. Please note that your weekly spot may no longer be available at that same time.
I have found that many of my clients like to continue to dive deeper or for accountability but that may not always be the case for you. As we move along through your path of therapy we will discuss. At any time you feel you want to move on to another path, change focus or goals or feel that therapy is no longer benefiting you, please bring that up in our session so we can decide what the best course is for you. I would rather us talk about it and transition you out of therapy then abruptly end. This is therapeutic in itself.
What happens during the first counseling session?
The first session is like going on a date. WAIT what I hate dating!! Ok ok I get it. But it is really a conversation to get to know each other. There is no pressure to share everything unless you want to. Some clients prefer for me to ask specific questions while others may not want to be asked questions but will share without as much prompting. There is NO wrong way. And yes if you have some questions to ask me, you can at this time. If I feel that it is not appropriate for our sessions, I will let you know. Remember this time is ALL about you. When else do you have that time?
When will I graduate from therapy?
Preparing for graduation begins during our first session. That’s right! During our first session, we begin having clarity on what is bringing you into therapy, goals, and what deep work you want to do. Preparing for graduation is an ongoing process and conversation. This depends on your goals and the work you want to do with me.
Do you offer in-person or telehealth/teletherapy video therapy sessions?
I have moved to doing 100% telehealth or teletherapy sessions. I know you are skeptical about this as traditionally therapy has only been in person. Trust me, I was not sure either but I found that the outcomes were the same or even better for clients. Why is this? You get to pick the location that suits you and where you feel most comfortable. Some of my clients have driven to a park and sit outside or in their car surrounded by nature, others on their porch or in a room of their home that feels comforting and safe for them. Find the right spot for you that is quiet and from distractions. Make sure you are not driving, trying to complete other tasks, or actively working. This allows for you to be fully present during your session and focused on your goals.
Telehealth is very convenient. You no longer have to drive that hour or so for your session making it better for time management in our busy schedules which leads to more consistent sessions. Some clients have arranged to meet on their lunch breaks at work or while they have dropped their child off at practice or school activity and have sat in their car while waiting. Telehealth video therapy sessions occur using a secure HIPAA compliant platform.
Do you accept Insurance?
I am not affiliated with any insurance companies. Why is this? This is a very common, complex question but it comes down to the fact that I care about you and want to provide you with the best services. In my over 10 years of experience, insurance is not really set up to support your mental health is the best way. I find that not accepting insurance allows for you to have full autonomy of their care. This also allows us to develop a care plan that is tailored to your specific needs. Often when working with insurance there are limitations such as the number of sessions and meeting a criteria for a specific diagnosis. Other times care may just not be covered by the insurance provider such as family or couples counseling.
Are there benefits to paying out of pocket for therapy?
First and foremost – is the autonomy over your care. Secondly is the added confidentiality as a third party, such as your insurance provider does not have access to your personal information. Lastly, we work together to assess the length (or number of sessions) of our work together according to what your specific needs are rather than having a set limit of sessions.
But what if I want to use my insurance?
I definitely understand wanting to use your insurance. That’s what it’s there for! But we don’t think it’s fair that your insurance could keep you from getting the help and best care you really need and deserve. I can provide you with a monthly superbill that you would submit to your insurance. Depending on your plan and what your out-of-network benefits are, your insurance company will then reimburse you.
What is your availability for anxiety, depression and trauma therapy?
I see clients on Mondays, Wednesday and Thursdays.
You won’t have to worry about getting a therapy appointment weekly because rather than having to change your schedule on a weekly basis, we have a dedicated standing time and day for our ongoing work. This will allow you to plan and make arrangements as needed with the other parts of your life (e.g. childcare, school, work, family, friends ect.). You may have an ideal time in mind but it may happen that it is already occupied. In that case, we will start sessions for another time (these may float) until your ideal time becomes available. Before offering new time slots to new clients, established clients are informed first of openings..
What if I need to cancel our appointment or I get sick or I’m going on vacation?
I have a 48-hour cancellation policy, so if you need to cancel for any reason, make sure you give me 48 hours notice to avoid paying the late cancellation fee, which is the full session rate.
If you are going on vacation, with plenty of notice we can plan for that. If there are times open prior, we can get you in or we will skip that session until you get back from your vacation.
